five things
Oct. 24th, 2010 12:55 pm1. I am still sick, owing to an inability to handle getting sick in my usual way, the method described by my old friend Mike Jenkins (and everafter thought of by me) as "Lay Down and Stay Down." When I start to feel sick, in this method, I go to the store for ramen and orange juice and then get in bed, where I remain for two days. After which, I feel all better. If I don't, I do a third day.
Alert readers will have spotted where this program will currently be unavailable to me. Unalert readers should refer to the last nine months worth of posts about The Small Boy.
2. Nothing wrong with tea and toast. I have rust-colored builder's tea (as my mother-in-law refers to it; full of milk and sugar) and challah with local butter. Even if it isn;t good for what ails me, it's just plain good.
3. I am now landed as a permanent resident of Canada, having filled out roughly a zillion forms and submitted a giant packet and been poked and prodded and other things. This makes my life much less stressful in three ways: a) no border official may now deny me entry into Canada for some weird wild-hair reason, b) I can start applying for arts money and c) I am 87 days away from hot-and-cold running health care, including my Secret Agent Lover Man's school board benefits which include all the top-ups.
4) East Coast tour with Ivan is settled: Toronto, Portland ME, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Philly. All the info is on my tour schedule (sbearbergman.com.tour). Come see us!
4a) New Yorkers, please note that the Manhattan gig will be with several other (awesome!) folks as well and Ivan and I will each read only one piece; the Brooklyn show will be our usual 90 minutes of just us reading and telling off-label stories and taking the piss. It will probably also include at least one dirty story. So choose according to your desires.
5. We went to Ottawa overnight and crossed the border into Hull/Gatineau to get the maple whiskey that's only available in Quebec. On the way home we stopped for Beau's beer (only in Kingston/Ottawa region), Kawartha Dairy ice cream, cheese and butter (only in the Kawarthas, though you can get a limited flavor selection at a few TO spots), and at Rising Bun for their amazing baked goods. I am very happy with the products, but actually even happier that I have a husband who believes that this is precisely how one should conduct one's drive home.
