five things

1. Safely home from Creating Change, which is lovely and welcome - I enjoyed myself enormously, but it's gogogo from 8am until midnight around there, and not thirty seconds to have a quiet sit. So home, and a little break, and seeing my guys, and getting lots of snuggles are all nice.

1a. Though being in Minneapolis with many of my favorite movement folks, young activists, and educators was also pretty excellent. Got to spend chill time with many of my favorite people, and also with a few new pals (and Miss Major! She really sat right next to me and we talked for a while about all sorts of things. Just the two of us! /fanboy squee).

2. I did, however, manage to get rerouted home direct to Toronto, sparing myself a great deal of time spent waiting at the Buffalo airport for a shuttle and a long land journey home. I have never been so glad for a maintenance issue on an airplane to take longer than an hour, nor for the benefits that my preferred status confers

3. I had been saving up airmiles like crazy in anticipation of the wedding of some dear peeps in a fairly inaccessible and expensive-to-fly-to location. Then they moved it to someplace much cheaper to get to. Now I have 150,000 airmiles and no idea to what use I might put them. Kind of a nice situation in which to find one's self. I just looked at the handy chart and discovered that we'll easily have enough miles to go to Hawaii next winter between 15 Jan and 28 Feb, right when I am always begging my Secret Agent Lover Man to please take pity on me and go somewhere warm together. I might just book the tickets now.

3a. A week on the beach in Hawaii? Last week of January, 2012? Anyone else? Rent an apartment or houseswap and just chill?

4. I've been thinking a lot recently about how frustrating it is when educators dumb complex concepts way down and present things as though there's a simple and obvious binary in options when there just isn't. When things in reality are substantially more complex and nuanced. I see it in queer and trans cultural competency, in talk about sex and relationships, in parenting/child-raising literature, and on and on. There must be ways to say, okay, this is complicated, let's talk about how and why and what to do if you get stuck deciding, without defaulting to "if you do [$thing], even once, DOOM!"

5. Yeah, okay, now I can't stop thinking about Hawaiian food. Spam musubi and kalua pig plates with macaroni salad, and lilikoi drinks and red coconut balls and poke... ::sigh::

5a. Maybe a trip to Seattle to eat at Kauai Family Restaurant and see my favorite Seattleans would hold me over in the meantime. Hm.

5b. Dear PNW: Let's find me some work, hm?
